Hiring a nanny can be overwhelming if you haven't done it before.

In this guide, I will go over the steps and my recommendations.

If you are using an agency, you just need to define what role you need exactly, whether a nanny, governess, maternity nurse, nanny-housekeeper, afterschool nanny, etc.

If you are not using an agency, you can ask friends or family if they have anyone to recommend.

You can also post a job on Job boards that specialize in nanny jobs in the specific area you are looking for. There are also websites that cover international positions. 

Once you receive CVs you must make sure that the applicants are properly trained/qualified.

Essential requirements for a childcarer would be a Paediatric First Aid Certificate, a DBS (criminal background check) and at least 2 contactable references.

You should also check for other skills or requirements according to your needs for example, if you need a cook, swimmer, driver, etc. 

It is also important to know if the person you are employing is willing to carry out those tasks that you expect, for example are they happy to load and unload the dishwasher? Tidy up children's bedrooms and do their laundry?

Checking references is important too. Make sure the references are from people who worked with the nanny. Don't accept family/friends as that is no guarantee that they are efficient and hard working.

Carry out zoom interviews with your shortlisted candidates. 

Pay attention to small red flags like not showing up to interviews, requesting too much information on Whatsapp without the willingness to have an interview, not sending their qualifications by email once requested.

If the person has to be chased, they are probably not interested enough, so don't waste your time.

Once you have found someone that you would like to hire, ask them for a trial first. Arrange a day or two in order to see if you like them and they like you.

Once you are satisfied with the trial, make a job offer.
